God’s Vision for a Life.

January 24, 2008 – 1:25 pm

Tuesday I was leading a small group through Luke 1:1-4:13.  Several of the questions centered around the future and God’s path for you in life.  The group consisted of 4 people all retired.  When these questions came up, specifically, “What experiences have you had with God that have prepared you for the future?”  The responses we all focused on their grandchildren and family.  This morning I thought about my children and how my prayers have broadened to being about my children’s future and call as well as the direction God has for me.

I wondered at what point if any does one begin to primarily focus on the people around them and not a vision for self.  Maybe their responses were just focused on their families and not just their families.  The question I had (and have) is does life itself push us in a direction in which it is more difficult to maintain an individual call and focus or is the natural process of life on in which we are directed toward passing on God’s vision for life?  Does the call become the longevity of life itself?

Facing these individuals with this question was had because at my stage of life, I want the best for my children’s future, but have not experienced the disappointments in a way that dissolves the hopes.  As life moves on, many of my hope and dreams have had to be modified because of one situation or another.  Holding out hope for the visions is difficult (almost miraculous) in the midst of a society that challenges one’s hopes and dreams at every turn.  God through Jesus Christ offers us hope beyond hope and the Spirit to help us stay upbeat and moving forward.
