Counter-Culturalism in the UMC, Confirmation Project - Day 3
May 14, 2008 – 4:06 pmYesterday I was reminded just how counter-cultural Methodism. I was talking with someone about the beliefs and practice of the UMC. I was sharing with her the views on gambling (linked here). After that conversation I began to think about some of the other Social Principles found in the Book of Discipline, when this feeling overcame me.
Our discussion took place in a public place and I found it striking as the words about gambling came out of my mouth and the thoughts of only grape juice during Communion ran through my head. Is the UMC is really counter-cultural and am I living a counter-cultural life?
Yes, at many levels I am living a Methodist life-style striving for perfection. Still far off, but thanks to God, closer today than yesterday.

I am going to the doctors tomorrow and was thinking how blessed I am that I can go to the doctor to get my foot fixed and do not have to have it cut off. Some people in countries do not have doctors and would have to have it cut off because they do not have doctors or medicine. Some even die from infections. I am happy that I live here that I can do these things. God has given us so much in this country.

We didn’t know what counter-culture was so mom looked it up. It means to do what your group (church) does not what the society does. We do this at church because we try to always have church and believe it is a necessary thing in our life.

Today i am happy that i can have a great school that other people can’t have. I am thankful that because i have a great education the sky is the limit for what i can do in life. I fell bad for the kids who can’t afford an education and hope god will help them learn and be able to reach their goals.

4th day Confirmation - Today as I write this I am eating dinner and think how lucky I am that I can eat dinner when I am hungry. I feel bad for those who can’t because they don’t have enough money and I pray that they can get some food. We only have to drive 4 minutes to the store and then have alot of choices to shop around. We have money to buy what we need. Other countries have to walk miles to get to just water and put in jugs to carry back. They do not shop at store but grow their food. It is very hard on them and have to work the whole day to get their food. Sometimes they don’t even eat dinner. I thank God that I am able to eat every night.
