Example of the “unChristian” Christian.
July 6, 2008 – 6:41 amSomeone I know was sharing with me that a Christian that he knows was recently bashing people with tattoos and claiming that “those with tattoos are [this or that]…” and stating that “the Bible says that it is a sin to have tattoos.” But what bothered this person the most is the blatant hypocrisy of judging people and justifying their opinions with an obscure, out of context scripture (check out the other rules contained in the chapter of Leviticus). Somewhere my friend got the idea that (forgive my sarcasm (that’s a sin too)) judging others for how they act or how they look isn’t a good thing. In fact, Jesus talks often about judging others (yet, never really says anything about tattoos, and just for the record, Jesus never mentions homosexuality but does mention divorce). According to the gospel accounts, Jesus was apparently under judgment from the religious elite of his time because of his persistent neglect for the “law” and his attentiveness to the Law of love.
What my friend experienced is what many are experiencing. Self proclaimed “Christian” experts, who look and act much like the religious elite that Jesus rebelled against. I guess in a way my frustration is causing me to judge these individuals in an unhealthy way, but at this point I am not sure how to feel about someone who has an opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus Christ and instead repels people by their holier-than-thou judgmentalism causing many to run from or at best stay at arms length from Christ and the church because of the intolerance and hypocrisy.

One Response to “Example of the “unChristian” Christian.”
